With the nation’s housing industry facing its greatest crisis since the Great Depression and the economy teetering near recession, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) is working to get Congress to move quickly to enact a second round of economic stimulus directed squarely at the housing sector.
The recently enacted Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 could fall short of achieving its intended results because it does not address the problems posed by the housing contraction that are at the root of today’s economic and financial market problems. Specifically, NAHB believes the best policy is to create a broad , temporary tax credit for the purchase of a home which provide the best stimulus for housing and the economy.
Jerry Howard will speak on NAHB’s efforts to get Congress to take action on this vital legislation along with recent activities by the Federal Reserve. He will also address the mortgage credit crunch that has spilled over into land acquisition, land development and home construction lending, increasing the challenges faced by builders in the current housing downturn.
