COMPLYING WITH THE NEW BPU UTILITY EXTENSION RULES

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities proposed new regulations in 2004 to further the Smart Growth agenda initiated by former Governor James McGreevey. The rules were adopted in December 2004 and became effective on March 20, 2005. The new rules are designed to promote Smart Growth and discourage development in areas designated as non-Smart Growth areas. Under the new regulations, builders who want to build in non-growth areas can do so, but will shoulder 100% of the costs for utility extensions, service lines and meters. Representatives from South Jersey Gas and New Jersey American Water Company will speak on how the new rules impact their company's procedures and answer questions related to complying with the new regulations.
